Home Wiring Standards and When to Call an Electrician
Your electrical system is the circulatory system of your home. It delivers power to every outlet, every appliance, every light. If it works, you never think about it. But if it's failing or outdated, it's a fire hazard you live with every day.
Detroit's housing stock is old. Many homes were built in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s with electrical systems designed for far lower electrical demand than modern homes require. Homes built before air conditioning was standard, before families had multiple computers, before charging five phones and running a dishwasher and a dryer simultaneously were all normal. The electrical system in a 1970s home wasn't designed for 2026 power usage.
Understanding electrical codes and what's changed
Modern homes are built to the National Electrical Code (NEC), updated every three years. The code has grown stricter about outlet placement, circuit breaker ratings, grounding, and safety devices like GFCI outlets.
GFCI outlets (ground-fault circuit interrupters) are now required in kitchens, bathrooms, and wet areas. They shut off power instantly if they detect a ground fault. Older homes often don't have them. Adding them is an inexpensive safety upgrade.
Older homes might have cloth-wrapped wiring, two-prong outlets without grounding, aluminum wiring (which has specific fire risk), or undersized breakers. Any of these can be a fire hazard under modern electrical load.
Modern electrical panels are designed to handle the high power demands of today's appliances that older fuse boxes cannot.
Red flags that your wiring is outdated or dangerous
Frequent circuit breaker trips. If a breaker trips when you run your AC and your dishwasher, your circuits are overloaded. That's not normal wear - that's your system signaling stress. Have an electrician inspect the load and the circuits.
Flickering lights. Flickering indicates a loose connection. Loose connections are fire hazards. Shut off the circuit and call an electrician.
Hot outlets or switches. An outlet or switch that's warm or hot to the touch is a direct fire hazard. Don't use it. Shut it off at the breaker and call a professional.
Burning smell near outlets. This is an active fire hazard. Shut off the breaker to that outlet immediately and call 911 if the smell is strong. Call an electrician to inspect before using that outlet again.
Undersized service panel. If your home's main electrical panel is 100 amps and you're running an air conditioner, electric water heater, and electric heat, you're pushing the system beyond its limits. Modern homes typically have 200-amp service. If you have less, talk to an electrician about an upgrade.
Cloth or rubber insulation on wires. If you can see electrical wiring in an attic or basement and it's wrapped in cloth or rubber (not plastic), that insulation is degraded and the wires are exposed. This is a fire hazard. Call an electrician.
